U.S. fuel economy reached a peak of 22 mpg in 1987, and then began a 17-year slide as consumers
bought more and more higher horsepower light trucks and vehicles each year.  For the past few
years we are again on the rise, and the Model Year 2008 average fuel economy of cars and light
trucks, sold in the U.S., is estimated at 20.8 miles per gallon.

Daniel Dingel. The inventor claims to have designed a process that
efficiently maximizes on-demand hydrogen extraction from the
electrolysis of ordinarily-available water. It is the hydrogen gas
that his car burns directly in the engine's combustion chamber.
The extraction process being on-demand, Dingel's car does not
store hydrogen gas onboard in quantities that pose an explosion
risk.
