The secret, inner lives of animals...
9-11-09
Did you know that spiders taste with their feet, that ants play, that you can remove the
brain of a salamander, grind it up and put it back in, and it will work normally.
Did you know that plants recognize those who have damaged them (see also the Secret
Lives of Plants); did you know that certain bats produce songs; that elephants are capable of
detecting seismic vibrations through the bones in their feet and nerves in their trunks and
therefore can communicate through the ground over hundreds of miles away from one
another using low frequency rumbles. Did you know that porpoises go to sleep in one half
of their brains at a time.

Learn how animals stay in touch, how they show grief, how they warn and help each other
in times of danger and how they problem-solve in this new book by by Dr Karen Shanor
and Jagmeet Kanwal.

The world's first floating wind turbine is in operation off of Norway. It is held in place by
a ballast cylinder weighing 3000 tonnes which can moor the turbine at depths up to 700
meters. The turbine itself rises 100 meters above the seawater.
